The California Historical Society engages a wide audience and we depend upon the generous assistance of volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the educational programs and public events we offer to members, historians, neighbors, and the general public. We currently offer opportunities to volunteer as an Office Aide, Gallery Aide, Event Aide, and Exhibition Docent.
Office Aide: The CHS office is a very busy place, and there are dozens of things that volunteers can assist with including mailings, filing, and special projects.
Gallery Guide: You will help welcome guests, inform them about our on view exhibition, and answer general visitor questions. Gallery Attendant Shifts are during public programs and sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays. The most important events for gallery support are Third Thursdays and Art Walk/Gallery Walks, which are three-times a year. Shifts: Flexible (shifts are 2–3 hours per event).
Event Helper: Support the set-up of CHS’ Public Programs, including: checking in guests, answering questions, and then breaking down after the event. Events are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and some Second Saturday. Shifts: Flexible.
Docent: Provide engaging and interactive tours for a diverse public including adults and children of all ages. Reading, walk-throughs, and practice tours are necessary to the training to become a CHS docent. Shifts: Flexible
