One of the most common ways that donors support CHS is through a charitable bequest. A bequest remains entirely under your control throughout your lifetime and becomes irrevocable only at death. There are several ways to establish a bequest, and it is not necessary to rewrite your current will or trust. Work with your attorney or financial planner to add an amendment, called a codicil, using language such as:
I give and bequeath to the California Historical Society (Tax ID 94-0385620), located in San Francisco, California, the sum of _____ ($_____), or _____ percent (_____%) of my estate, or (description of property) to be used for the benefit of its general purposes (or describe the CHS program you wish to support).
We would be pleased to work with you as your create or revise your estate plans. Regardless of the size of your estate, your gift will help preserve California’s rich and diverse histories for future generations.
Gifts to the Collection
Personal papers, fine art, photographs, ephemera and artifacts are tangible personal property that may be donated to CHS. CHS’s archival and curatorial teams, and the board of trustees, carefully consider such gifts before they are accepted. For more information about donating to the collection, please click here.
If you have already included the California Historical Society in your estate, please contact us and receive membership in the California Legacy Circle. Please download and complete the California Legacy Circle form (or complete it on-line) to share information about your gift.
