“I am a new graduate nurse who started my new job in communicable disease for El Dorado County in the middle of March at the beginning of the pandemic and shelter-in-place orders. My job has been to track positive COVID-19 cases, and respond to emails and phone calls from the public. My job duties have meant making someone’s day by telling them that they are an essential worker and can stay open, or ruining someone’s day by telling them they are non-essential and must close down. I also have been tasked to contact positive-tested individuals and close contacts to provide education about protocols for isolation and quarantine. This opportunity is very different than what I interviewed to do, but the COVID-19 situation has meant shifting personnel resources to meet the demands of the time. I am thankful to be employed when so many have lost their jobs. Furthermore, I stand in amazement that I have the privilege to start my career in public health nursing working in communicable disease in the midst of a pandemic.”
