“In early March, I was worried about choosing between three summer internships and planning on ordering my cap and gown for the commencement ceremony. Fast forward to late March, when I was let go from my on-campus lab internship. My housemate went back to Los Angeles to live with her family, and I had no idea what post-graduation would look like. Sitting here today, I work a full-time job while still taking two classes, planning for graduation photos, since that’ll be the only celebration I’ll have for graduation, and preparing for my courthouse wedding, which was hastily planned before another shutdown could happen. I was unable to say goodbye to the university that was my home for four years.”

“If I had written this in just one more week, I would have been able to talk about my experiences of taking my last finals on Thursday, graduating from university on Friday, and getting married on Tuesday.”

Lucero, 22
