Daniel, Berkeley
“My friend’s older brother died on his birthday in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We lived only three blocks away from their house, and I frequently saw them in the neighborhood. A few weeks before he died, my brother and I ran into him and his younger sister, who I am close friends with, as we have gone to the same schools since we were toddlers. We exchanged a few laughs and went on our ways, not knowing it would be our last time seeing one another. When a member of the Jewish community dies, the community gathers together and sits shiva to support the grieving family. Except we could not do that due to COVID restrictions on gatherings. I feel robbed of my grieving process and robbed in supporting my community.”
